Deathly Insanity Series

Hazel Butler’s Deathly Insanity series is a set of Urban Fantasy mystery novels with overlapping characters and plot lines exploring the themes of mental illness and death through paranormal and fantasy metaphors. While it is the intention for the novels to be as compelling and entertaining as possible, Hazel would also like to use these novels to help raise awareness of mental illness and the plights of the mentally ill, their friends, families, and loved ones.

When Andee Tilbrook’s husband died, her preoccupation with death turned to obsession. Thanks to her unique ability to commune with the dead, her husband remains all too close, yet never close enough. Mired in grief, she clings to James’s spirit, slowly losing touch with the world, her friends, and any desire to continue living.

But when her friend Josh becomes the target of Natalya, a jealous, capricious and violent Russian beauty, Andee somehow finds the strength to free herself from her misery long enough to help him. They soon discover that Natalya is wanted by the police for her involvement in a series of grisly murders, and Andee is dragged into the inquiry by the same man who investigated her own husband’s death.

Torn between new feelings for Josh, and fear that he might be involved in the murders that seem to threaten anyone who comes close, Andee must face the realities of her life, her past, and her very nature-and do it all in time to save her own life.

Evelyn Dempsey is about to lose her heart.

Forced to flee her family and home at an unbearably young age, Evelyn found herself roughing it on the streets of Manchester. There she forged an unconventional family with Sookie and a gang of street urchins, and embarked on an even less conventional lifestyle. Fortunately for Evelyn she is a consummate liar, larcenist, and lay, and lacks the emotional capacity to care about what she does, and what is done to her. When the son of a major player falls for her she thinks her luck is finally in, but Jeremy is far from a White Knight, and the price of being his princess is far higher than Evelyn could ever imagine. Hooked on Jeremy’s special brand of Oxycodone and cocaine, and passed around his men on a whim, Evelyn seeks comfort in the loving arms of Jeremy’s sister, Jade, and a the surprisingly cerebral conversations she begins to share with Luke, a mysterious stranger who frightens even Jeremy.

Luke is dark, brooding, gorgeous and inexplicably chivalrous. In a world of drug lords, whores, and junkies, he is certainly memorable, and the interest he takes in Evelyn forces her to re-evaluate her life and the choices she has made. The dream of a better life may be the death of her, however, for she has forgotten the cardinal rule of the streets: everything has a price, especially a young girl’s heart. The streets of Manchester suddenly become even more dangerous, as Evelyn and Sookie stumble upon the body of a dead prostitute, whose heart has been cut clean from her chest.

Evelyn struggles with the consequences of her life, even as it takes an unexpected twist, but the closer she comes to the life she has always dreamed of, the more bodies appear, and the deeper she falls into the underbelly of the city.

And it’s stranger than she could ever have imagined.
